All About Lifestyle Counseling What you need to know about this new trend in personal development and health
Lifestyle
counseling might sounds like a pretty frivilous way to spend time and money,
doesn't it -- seems like a real California, New Age thing to do.
However, sometimes the answer to a current concern or imbalance is a
simple adjustment to your lifestyle.
In a nutshell, lifestyle
counseling provides you with support and information about how to bring
important aspects of your life into balance, such as diet, exercise, activities, work environment, etc.
We use Ayurveda, principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine ("TCM"), intuitive somatic balancing and stress management techniques to help align your life with your physical constitition
so you're working with your true nature instead of against it. Both
Ayurveda and TCM systems maintain that this approach gives you the best
chance of maintaining health and vitality.
Ayurveda lifestyle counseling combined with TCM can help you:
• Strengthen and calm digestive disturbances such as gas, bloating, and constipation;
• Reduce the effects of stress, and give you tools for coping with stressful situations;
• Support your immune system;
• Help to relieve fatigue and anxiety;
• Promote more restful, calm sleep;
• Help relieve the frequency and duration of headaches and migraines, and in some cases, eliminate them;
• May include aspects of spiritual guidance according to your beliefs to make sure you're acting in accordance with your values; and
• Bring women's reproductive systems into balance by reducing stress, use of appropriate herbs and self-help acupressure points.
Lifestyle counseling is not:
• Psychological counseling as you'd get with a Marriage and Family Counselor or psychologist about deeper emotional issues;
• Medical advice as per allopathic or Western medicine;
• Career or vocational counseling as such, although these aspects of your life will be examined through the holistic filters of Ayurveda and TCM to see how well these aspects of your life align with your essential nature.
Is lifestyle counseling the same as wellness (or life, or success) coaching? No, although there are similarities. With lifestyle counseling, I
act as a guide, providing you with information relating to holistic
health specific to your situation and concerns. This can include
offering support via email and phone to fine-tune how you put the
information into action.
We use Ayurvedic and TCM principles
as the foundation for health at all levels. As a lay minister with
EverGreen Herb Gardens, and as a Reiki Master, I can also offer you spiritual guidance and
assistance with discovering your life purpose within the framework of
your own beliefs. My understanding about life coaching is that the
focus is mainly on setting goals, changing mental and emotional habits
for greater success and may also include career counseling. (We can
touch upon all of these using the filter of Ayurveda and TCM.)
Ayurveda
lifestyle counseling helps you to select foods, herbs, activities and
even careers based on how well these align with your nature.
Recommendations made in session are simple and easy to understand and
are grounded in practicality. Sometimes conditions can be changed by
simple lifestyle changes, especially when it comes to reducing stress.
I include stress management education as part of your session, and tie
this in with the Ayurvedic information.
I also draw upon Five
Elements Acupressure to balance the meridians and the emotions
associated with them. Ayurveda and TCM have a lot in common in terms of
looking at patterns, imbalances, and how they relate to the natural
world.
To be absolutely clear, I do not diagnose or prescribe,
but provide you with information for enhanced self-understanding. You
are free to act upon the information, or not. It's completely your
choice. You are in charge.
The goal is to achieve optimum
health and balance so you can feel your best. We can just focus on one
or two things, or you can choose to "dive deep" and use the Complete Wellness Program to create transformation at all levels of being. Using
Ayurveda, TCM, stress reduction techniques and developing your
intuition, creating this much sought-after health, wellness and
vitality is possible.
How much does it cost for lifestyle counseling? Your
first session (in-office) will probably be 90 minutes long, because we
go over your medical history and current concerns in detail. You are
also introduced to the basic concepts of the doshas. This session
usually runs $85.
Follow-up sessions tend to be shorter, and
are charged at $65 per hour, with the minimum being 20 minutes at $30.
When an Ayurveda lifestyle counseling follow-up appointment is combined
with a therapeutic bodywork session, you receive a discount, and you're
charged $25 per half hour over the time of your bodywork session.
